Center for the Advancement of Primary Care Physicians
Building your Future in Primary Care Medicine
Our Mission
Our mission is to improve the quality of and access to primary health care. We will achieve this by fostering international medical students to the pursuit of primary care training in the U.S. Our students will learn to identify and address the unique health care needs of the community while also developing core professional values, effective communication skills, and foundational clinical examination abilities expected of medical students.
Primary care physicians are critical in the role of maintaining overall health of the population at large. They serve as the focal point of care from preventative screenings, coordination of specialist care, and patient education.
It is anticipated that there will be a shortage of primary care physicians of up to 40, 000 physicians by the year 2036 as reported by the American Academy of Medical Colleges (AAMC). This will further stress the healthcare industry.
Currently, per the National Residency Matching Program (NRMP), more international medical students pursue primary care training in the U.S. than U.S. medical students.
Our program is geared toward international medical students interested in pursuing primary care training in the U.S. The goal is to provide direct mentoring to the students in an exclusive and highly personalized program where they are educated in our healthcare system, the core competencies and professional skills needed to succeed in U.S. residency programs.
Overview
CAPPMD Prepares You for the Road Ahead
As you embark on your quest to pursue residency training in the United States, it is critical to understand the current landscape you will encounter.
Based on National Residency Matching Program data, international medical graduates (IMGs) now fill the majority of primary care residency slots (Internal Medicine, Family Medicine, Pediatrics) in the US. In 2023, over 60% of the primary care positions offered went to IMGs.
In fact, the pool of IMG applicants continues to grow while U.S. graduate interest in primary care declines. The result is a highly competitive environment where IMGs are not only vying against U.S. medical graduates but are increasingly competing among themselves. In this crowded landscape, IMG candidates must develop distinguished strategies such as stellar application materials, U.S clinical experience, strong letters and strategic interview preparation. This will assure a competitive edge over their growing cohort of international peers.
